It’s a hard world, and if you’re a woman, it is even harder. Recently, global conversations on the treatment of women worldwide have begun to take the centre stage.
Issues of rape, harassment, gender-based violence, inequality in the workplace, FGM, low enrollment of girls in school in comparison to boys, child marriage, physical, sexual and psychological abuse targeted at women, all of these things have become more widely talked about.
It has become clear that women are the next on the list of endangered species. And it is ironical because the place of women in the world is one that is immeasurable. Recent statistics show that a child born to a mother who can read and write is 50% more likely to survive past the age of five.
Women empowerment is vital for global advancement. The world has realised this, and is now making efforts on this. But there is always more that can be done, and this is what Her Network does.
Her Network is a platform created and geared towards bridging the gap between women and women. A platform where women are inspired, encouraged and supported to be and do better in their professional, personal and spiritual lives.
It is just not enough to empower women, but to empower women through networking with other empowered women, for inspiration and support. It is women helping women; how more empowered can that be?
Founded by Nkem Onwudiwe, a PR and Communications Expert, whose passion for women empowerment birthed the idea, Her Network is a platform for connection, inspiration and growth.
Her desire to see more women support and encourage one another had compelled her to create a platform as well as build a community of women across the country and globally, to connect, inspire and encourage women to collaborate, come together and help one another grow.
As all great things are begun, Her Network had started with a need. A realization that women do not come together enough and the need to create that which she wished to exist.
Focus is a very huge part of Her Network’s success. Focus on self, on valuable and creative social media content, on the message, vision and on how the platform should be seen.
On Her Network’s success, Nkem notes that passion is never enough. She acknowledges that passion will only sustain to a certain level but with every other thing in life, it needs the support of other values like tenacity, faith, positivity and focus and sometimes, funds.
These are what will keep Her Network to achieve its future goal to be recognized as a valuable and relevant platform that has been influential in bridging the gap between women and women globally.
But Nkem doesn’t measure Her Network’s success based on other people’s definition of success. To her, success is relative and consistency is key.
The biggest lesson she has learnt is not to wait too long to apply yourself and to start weaning whatever you want to see grow.
Her advice for anyone looking to follow their passions is for them to first determine that that is what they want to do and then focus (an important ingredient for success) on it in addition to believing in themselves and their capabilities.
There is truly nothing greater, more beautiful, more genuine and honest, than women helping other women succeed, especially in this world where to succeed as a woman, you must first prove yourself to the institutions created for and in favour of, the man.
