Rihanna’s Eyebrows On The Cover Of British Vogue Is The Talk Of The Town
Rihanna’s out of the world appearance on the September cover of British Vogue did not hit us like a new thing from the wonder box of Bad Gal Riri. We have been spell bounded to accept any choice of clothing Rihanna decides to clad in but the ultra-skinny, pencilled-on eyebrows is a thing we cant stop thinking about at the moment.
“Thin eyebrows are just beautiful, very ladylike… but it’s still punk,” Rihanna told Enninful of the look she wanted for the shoot. “That’s what I enjoy in fashion and make-up – there’s so many different textures and colours and vibes you can create.”
The creator of the much debated, make-up artist Isamaya Ffrench, doesn’t seem ready to reveal any bit of the process involved in creating the funky brows. She said;
“that’s an industry secret, ha!” – but has been at the centre of the global debate around the return of the razor-sharp brow. Put it this way, if even Good Morning Britain’s Richard Arnold has gone to the trouble of recreating the look, you’ve definitely created a true beauty moment with an impact that goes far beyond editorial styling.
“I don’t think they are groundbreaking! Marlene Dietrich was rocking them back in the ‘30s? But I suppose it is a bold move for a Vogue cover,” said Ffrench.“Edward always has a major vision. He sent me some references of a mood he wanted to create with the make-up look and I sent him back my ideas and we went from there.”
With Rihanna’s own beauty background, the look was always going to push the boundaries of style – especially when created in collaboration with Enninful, who described the look as “completely instinctive”, and Ffrench, who is known for her creative and modern take on make-up and personal style.
“Rihanna is amazing at make-up so working with her is like working with a make-up artist. She knows what works for her (even though everything works on her!) and it’s always a collaboration,” she says. “We were shooting till 6.30am… Music turnt up!”
But does this mean we can expect to see a return of the ultra-thin brows we thought we’d left firmly behind in the ‘90s?
“I think more and more people are becoming pros at eyebrow blocking, and changing your eyebrow shape always has a dramatic effect on your face so… probably!”
